“Dear Sir, It is not surprising that the government is going to reduce the amount of money given to The Sports Council. The British Mountaineering Council has recklessly squandered tens of thousands of pounds (hundreds of thousands of pounds actually) in the promotion of sport climbing contests. Interest in such events is limited to a small percentage of the mountaineering world. I suggest that if their money to the BMC is drastically cut the BMC should be awarded the shot-in-the-foot prize.” To the con-trary, the BMC has been involved in a rolling con-tract from the Sports Council for £450,000 per annum since 1997… £6,750,000 would have saved soo many lives from cancer over the last fifteen years…
